Guduchi is one of the most famous detoxifying herbs in the Ayurvedic pharmacopeia. It crosses the blood-brain barrier and improves cognitive functioning and recall, but its main claim to fame is its power to reduce ama (toxins) and even to protect the body from the harmful effects of toxic substances. It enjoys the status of a rasayana or rejuvenative herb and has been traditionally used for three years in order to promote longevity and imperviousness to toxins.
Though considered tridoshic, guduchi can be used long-term to reduce symptoms related to excess pitta and to kindle agni, i.e. substituting toxic fire with purifying fire. It is also supportive of all seven dhatus, but is specific for the small intestines and all conditions characterized by inflammation.
Research suggests that it can be used as a protective herb while undergoing chemotherapy.
